Parking Offences

Sir,—l have just received from the court a parking fine of $2 plus $2 Court costs. As this is my first offence I was somewhat surprised that any action should be taken. I called at the traffic office and was informed that some first offenders were fined and some not (My overparking for 10 minutes inconvenienced noone as there were ample vacant lots at the time.) Would

the chief traffic inspector inform me and other first offenders what formula they use to select first offenders for Court action? Do they draw the names from a hat? They Sere unable to inform me at le office counter.—Yours, etc., BALDI. August 27, 1967.

[The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “Before an information is laid for any alleged breach of the by-laws it must be established that there is a case to be answered. Explanations in mitigation, traffic movements, time factor, etc., are taken into consideration before action is decided. This procedure would have been adopted in the correspondent’s case.”]
