Toys For Templeton
A collection of toys, including rocking horses, dolls, golliwogs, blackboards, teddy bears, rubber balls, a wheelbarrow, a swing, a doll’s house and a large Hyde Park pram, was yesterday given to children at the Templeton Hospital and Training School by members of the Christchurch Rotary Club. The president of the club (Mr L. S. Johns) said that a number of toys had also been given by members of the Parent-Teacher Association of
Shirley School and by pupils of the school. Mr Johns said that the club had first become aware of the need for toys at Templeton from a voluntary worker at the school (Mrs A. Pedder) whose husband is a member of the club. A collection had been made by the club’s community service committee. “One of our aims is to be of service to the community and to help as much as we can with worthwhile projects such as this,” said Mr Johns.
In the past the club had undertaken a number of similar projects, he said. Mrs Pedder said the toys would be given mostly to the younger children at the school. The prams would be used to carry small children who were not able to move easily themselves. The photograph shows Mr Johns (left) and Mr E. G. Ware, chairman of the service committee, handing toys to Mr P. Shields, the truck driver.
