‘BLACK DAY’
Over-70s Dismissed
(N.Z'. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. The Railway Tradesmen’s • Association today described r tomorrow as a black day in the lives of a number of rail- . waymen who were being ■ sacked solely on the grounds • of being aged 70 or more. i The secretary of the R.TA. - (Mr A. G. Goldsmith) said: . “This heartless phasing out i solely on the grounds of age comes grotesquely from a i Government which, not so long ■ ago, spent much time in Parliament and on the hustings asking people not to retire while they were productive . and in good health.” He said the Government , had promised extra payments ' for each year that age and other benefits were not [ claimed. Mr Goldsmith accused the ' Government of swelling the ’ ranks of the unemployed ' rather than easing the situation.
