BOUND FOR CHINA

Three hundred registered Corriedale hoggets left Lyttelton in the Norman yesterday for China. They travelled as deck cargo in weather-proof crates, and were expected to reach Shanghai in 21 days.

The Norman, which took on general cargo ait Wellington, Dunedin, and Lyttelton, is to call at Manila before discharging the sheep. For the Christchurch branch of Wright, Stephenson, this was a repeat order, as the Chinese bought 150 stud Corriedales and 150 stud Border Leicesters from the company a year ago. Strict conditions were again attached to the sale of the present consignment. All sheep were required to be shorn, each fleece being weighed and tagged with the breeder's prefix, and the flock number of the sheep from which it was taken. Sufficient food was shipped with the sheep to cover a journey lasting three weeks, and for 20 days after delivery. It consisted of 700 bales of

lucerne hay, and more than 500 bags of compounded food The sheep—27o ewe hoggets and 30 ram hoggets—were chosen from 25 studs. The ewe hoggets are travelling 12 to a crate, and the ram hoggets 10 to a crate. In charge of them is Mr W R, T, Buchanan, of Gore. Hi

accompanied the previous shipment of sheep sent by Wright, Stephenson to China. The picture shows one of the Corriedales being held outside a pen on the after deck of the Norman by a representative of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd.
