Edinburgh Awards Presented
If people were going to make their mark in life they showed signs of it when they were young, the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) said in Christchurch yesterday. “This was behind Prince Philip’s concept when he started the Duke of Edinburgh awards,” he said.
His Excellency was addressing 26 young people from several New Zealand centres and one from the Ellice Islands to whom he presented the Duke of Edinburgh’s gold award. “Of all the activities I have been asked to engage in, nothing has given me more pleasure than this one,” his Excellency said.
“We have been determined that the standard for this award would not drop. Because we like the runners-up, ■they are still not ' good enough. You can be quite confident that these young people have measured up to a pretty high standard.” Two of the winners are girls—Maureen Ella Hydes (Girls’ Brigade), 94a Dyers Pass road, Christchurch; and Adele Margaret Cardwell (Girl Guides), 128 McFaddens road, Christchurch.
The following students of St Andrew’s College won awards:—Peter Phillip Alexander, 24 Petrie street; Graeme Robert Adams, 181 Hackthorne road, Arthur George Cotton, 5 Devonport lane; John Raymond Crothall, 48 Huntsbury avenue; William Anderson Hartley, 158 Knowles street; Tito Isala, Vaitupu, Gilbert and Ellice Islands; Geoffrey Arthur King, King’s Hotel, Greymouth; John Francis Sutton, 22 Royds street; Geoffrey Edgar Twiss, 10 Innes road; and Murray Robert Williamson, 30 Clifford avenue. Six Waitaki Boys’ High School students who won awards are:—Dennis Wilbur Taylor, No. 4 R.D. Ashburton; John William Sloane, 115 Watford street, Christ church; Colin David Fraser, 139 King street, Temuka;
Murray William Archibald, Main North road, Temuka; Michael John Hunter, 29 Balmoral street, Oamaru; and John Webster, Weston, near Oamaru.
Twins from King’s High School. Dunedin, won awards. They are Alan and Denis Ferguson, 14 Moreau street, St Kilda. Malcolm William Whitfield, 8 Earls road, Dunedin, is another pupil who won an award. Other winners are: John Stanton (Boys’ Brigade), 85 Quinns road, Christchurch; Norman Murray Parker (Boys’ Brigade), Otago University; Bryan Gary Phillips (Wanganui High School); Paul Maxwell Lamb, (Boy Scouts), 35 Emmett street, Christchurch; and Ross lan Walsh (Boy Scouts), 24 Glynne Crescent, Christchurch.
