More Time Sought To Study Bill
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, August 4. The Waikato Presbytery will urge the Government to give the Maori people more time to consider the Maori Affairs Amendment Bill.
The resolution was adopted at the Presbytery’s August meeting in Cambridge, the Rev. D. M. Cattanach, of Cambridge, said today. The decision is believed to be the first move by a church group to influence the Government over the controversial question. The resolution noted the widespread concern among the Maori people because they believed the effect of the pro-
posed measures would be the accelerated and final aliens, tion of their lands.
The Presbytery noted that this concern of the Maoris was a political reality, and urged the Government to give the Maori people the time foi which they asked to enable them to consider the bill fully. The resolution also urged that Parliament consider the bill “not before” next session.
