RANDOM REMINDER
A WOMAN SCORNED
Even at the tender age of a year and a half children exhibit the begin, nings of their adult qualities, and they make a fascinating study, even for their parents, whose powers of observation are sometimes dimmed by the need to get through piles of washing or to tread cold boards in the middle of the night bringing drinks to the little one. Nicola is a typical example of a child who is going to develop into a woman of compassion and generosity. But she will certainly be one to object to anyone who blatantly
ignores her friendly overtures. It \ii Nicola’s habit to ask any member of family, or one of her friends, to share with her when she has a plate of food or a drink of milk. She will have a sip, and then out will come the small arm with the glass offered and gravely accepted. Refusal would cause affront, and, probably, the rejection of the rest of the milk. On a recent evening, Nicola had a glass of milk before bed, and sat with it watching television. Mr Peter NeHl was
reading the news. Nicola was not particularly interested, but she was in Mr NeilL She went over to the set and offered him some milk. He kept on, in measured tones, reciting the events of the day. She encouraged him to have some milk by saying “Ta" and smiling graciously. He ignored her. She tried again, and he kept on reading the news. The rest of the family had to admire Mr Neill. It can not be easy to retain the poise and confidence he showed, when he had milk running down over his chin.
