FIRST-AID TRAINING
Courses For Firemen Firemen, for the first time as a group, in Christchurch, have been studying first-aid under officers of the St. John Ambulance Association. On Monday evening 20 firemen and officers were examined for their first-aid certificates. Last week the other 23 members of the group were examined. Senior Station Officer D. G. Mardon said the suggestion that the men obtain their first-aid certificates had come from the men themselves.
They had felt that if they were called on to handle injured people then they should at least know what to do for them. The idea of firemen obtaining first-aid certificates was first put forward about three months ago. The Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) had given his permission. For the last 10 weeks in their own time the firemen had been studying for their certificate examinations. In return for their first-aid training the firemen plan to teach some of their skills in firefighting and tower work to members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
