Thais Asked For Troops
(N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) BANGKOK, July 27. Two United States Presidential envoys yesterday asked Thailand to contribute more troops to the Vietnam war, a reliable source reported. The Thai answer was not disclosed.
The request came during a meeting of General Maxwell Taylor and Mr Clark Clifford with the Thai Prime Minister, Thanom Kittlkachom, and other high-ranking officials. The source said General Taylor did not specify how many more troops Thailand should send to Vietnam.
Observers in Bangkok said it appeared unlikely that the Presidential emissaries would get any commitment of additional Thai troops without a measure of “arm twisting” and it was believed the United States would not do this.
