Strong Line-Up For Tonight's Game

ALTHOUGH the guiding principle behind the Venture for Victory men’s basketball team is the spreading of the Christian faith, the line-up scheduled

to meet the Canterbury invitation team in Cowles Stadium this evening is as strong as any previously fielded in this country. And until the game is finished the players will have only one aim—to further their already impressive record by beating the home side and at the same time giving spectators a sample of world class basketball. Afterwards they will have the opportunity to speak on Christianity but the public will first be given the chance to leave if they want to. One player who should be easy to recognise this evening will be T. Dose, who at 6ft 9in is the biggest man in the team. A Californian, he was an alternate in the American Olympic team in 1964. Four years earlier he was chosen “player of the year” in the Californian Interscholastic Federation. He was chosen for the All-Pacific Coast team for two years and was named in the All-American team. Only two inches shorter is D. Mclntosh, who was a member of the Kentucky allstate team in 1962. Last season and the one before he was selected for the AllPacific Coast team. Another outstanding performer is all-rounder R. Jensen, who is 6ft sin. He has played and coached basketball for many years but has also made a name in other

sports. He was prominent in swimming and water polo and was a member of the United States surf team which visited Australia in 1956.

A man who will have to be guarded very closely by his Canterbury opposite is G. Terzian, who has been outstanding at tennis as well as basketball. At 6ft 3in, he is a fine rebounder and one of the highest scorers in the side. In his third year at Westmont College, California, he averaged 20 points a game and went close to the record for a single game when he scored 41 points. He is currently basketball coach at Pasadena High School. C. Appel, a key guard, can also be relied on to score freely. He has turned down offers from the Cincinnati Royale and Hawaiian Chiefs professional teams and has travelled widely playing and coaching basketball. His great skill earned him All-Pacific Coast team honours for two years. Two other players exceed 6ft. They are J. Partain (6ft 3in) and D. Weir (6ft 6in). Weir was voted the “most inspirational player” in his senior year at the University of California. The shortest man in the team is L. Harter who is sft lOin but he more than makes up for his lack of inches with his great agility. The other tourists are E. Hix, who achieved all-league honours at Hollywood High School, J. Poteet, a member of the Texas All-State team in 1959, and L. Gresham, an All-C.I.F. performer at Pasadena Acadamy.
