Rocky Lane Fancied At Wanganui Today

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

Rocky Lane, a winner at Hawera, may win again in the Dr. Simmons Memorial at Wanganui today. The chestnut from Waitara should be too good for his rivals in the first leg of the Lgmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s T.A.B. double.

W. D. Skelton, who rode his eighty-second winner for the season at Hastings on Saturday, will again ride Rocky Lane.

The Blue Coral gelding was superior to his rivals at Hawera. The ground was very heavy and he ran on strongly to win by four lengths. The track at Wanganui is in good order but rain is forecast and the going should be easy. Mr Charlie, an improving light-weight from Matamata, and Major Luca look' good prospects. Mr Charlie ran fifth against a strong open field at Tauranga a week ago. He was handy all the way and looked an early winner. J. A. Messent, who has been having a great run in double races, will ride Major Luca.

Major Luca has not raced since his unlucky second to Recharge at Awapuni last month but he has been working well and is expected to parade at his peak. Cox, which stays well, could be the one to beat in the second leg, the Patea Hack Handicap. Cox failed at Awapuni last month but

there he became unsettled in bis stall and stood as the gates opened. Cox, which had good previous form with successive three seconds, will meet a moderate field.

Lady Colleen, a last start fourth in an 18-horse field over 11 furlongs at Awapuni, will be R. J. Skelton’s mount She shaped very well in her first test over a middle distance and could be the hardest for Cox to beat Lenoman, which has been running on well in shorter hack sprint events, is a previous winner at Wanganui which could fare welt Deep Blue and Vice Consul may do best of the others.
