Drama Prize Awarded
Miss Jeanne Lomax, a 14-year-old fourth form pupil at Christchurch Girls’ High School, has won the Junior Playwrights’ Competition organised by the British Drama League in the Christchurch and North Canterbury Area.
Her play is called “The Easy Way Out” It was about “poor people who talked about what they would do if they won a lot of money, and then when they did win a lot of money, their ideas changed,” she said yesterday.
She wrote the play during school holidays, and was most surprised at her win. She said the fourth forms were producing plays next term, but she would not put forward her play for production. “I am sure the class would not want it. It is the most scratchy thing I have ever read,” she said with a laugh. Mr Hunter Bell, area president of the British Drama League, said the competition was held annually. It aimed to encourage secondary school children to write plays. There was no provision for perform-
ing the winning plays, but “we always hope the schools might do that,” he said. Jeanne Lomax, who Is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C. R. Lomax, of Beynolds avenue, will receive her prize at the league’s area festival In the Repertory Theatre on July 17.
