TRACTOR FOR INDIA
A cheque for £ 1170 was handed yesterday to Sir Francis Adams, chairman of the Christchurch district committee of C.0.R.5.0. to enable an Indian organisation, Action for Food Production, to buy a tractor for a farm development project in the state of Gujaratin. The presentation of the cheque was the elimax of a campaign launched in May, shortly before the world ploughing championships, by the Atlantic Union Oil Company in association with its dealers in the Christchurch and Ashburton areas. Forms for a painting competition open to young people under 17 years of age and flags, in the form of transfers, of countries taking part in the contest were sold to raise money for the tractor. Action for Food Production is a recently established national relief organisation in India representing the Indian Government and relief and missionary organisations, including C.0.R.5.0. While Mr J. Hayman, a former Canterbury man and a graduate of Lincoln College, was in New Zealand recently on furlough, discussions were held with him on how assistance could best be given to Action for Food Production. In acknowledging the cheque, which was handed to him by Mr M. J. Malone, general manager of Blue Star Taxis, representing proprietors of Atlantic service stations in Christchurch and Ashburton, Sir Francis Adams said that Mr Hayman, who represented C.0.R.5.0. on
Action for Food Production, was the only employee of C.0.R.5.0. abroad. Mr G. H. Coley, organiser for C.0.R.5.0. in Canterbury and the West Coast, said Mr Hayman had already been helping people in India to produce food,. and a great deal of equipment had already been sent there under his supervision. When Mr Malone showed Sir Francis Adams some of' the winning entries in the painting competition he drew his attention to the work of a 15-year-old boy from the Cerebral Palsy School who had done his painting using a chin piece.
As a special prize, this boy is being given a flight to Mount Cook with a guardian. A set of the New Zealand Encyclopaedia is also being presented to the school.
The first three place-win-ners in each of the four sections of the painting competition are receiving a threevolume set of the encyclopaedia, and the first 10 in each group will be taken on a two-hour educational flight over the South Island later in the month.
