Another Try To Give Bush Away
Plans for the Rhodes Convalescent Home subdivision have again been turned down by the Heathcote County Council; but the home’s committee of management will have another try.
Negotiations have been continueci for months, and hinge on the eommittea’s wish to preserve a patch of bush on the Dyers Pass road frontage.
“The children’s library, on this frontage, is on a triangu-lar-shaped reserve with its apex in the bush, and the committee’s latest plan of subdivision suggested that the adjoining bush should be taken into the reserve,” said Dr. S. Carson, a member of the committee.
“We suggested that the council should take this land in lieu of sections or the cash which the council may, if it wishes, take for the subdivision contribution. The area we offered would rave been
twice as much as the normal contribution. “The council has turned the offer down, saying that there are enough reserves in the arga“We don’t want to remove the bush. If the subdivision came right up to the library, it would leave a funny little reserve, and would create enormous problems in draining Purau terrace. “We feel the stretch of green belongs to the hill, and that the council could pick up a lot in rates if we were allowed to go ahead with the subdivision, and not made to bulldoze down the trees.” Dr. Carson said that the committee in making its next request to the council, would try to exert some pressure through a petition from residents. \
