MOTORWAY WIDENING
6ft More For Sealing
The widening and sealing of about 58 chains of the motor-' way were approved by the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority on Wednesday. The widening of about 6ft on the east side of the motorway, will extend from the entrance to the cutting almost to the toll plaza. Earlier the authority had sought to have a crawler lane for heavy traffic, but the National Roads Board has refused a grant for this. The Ministry of Works wrote saying that widening could be done by shaping up the shoulders, compacting, and then sealing. The ministry suggested that selected contractors be invited to submit quotations. The authority gave its works committee power to act. “It will get rid of the loose stones that have been a source of annoyance when thrown up by trucks moving to the side of the road,’* Mr W. P. Glue said.
