Running Scared Shapes Well

Running Scared came into reckoning for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Seaton Memorial with a smart sprint over six furlongs on the No. 7 grass at Riccarton yesterday.

Ridden by R. Murphy, Running Scared led Jester Jinks (G. Gullery) from the start, holding a comfortable lead of two lengths at the end, and finishing a good gallop in Imin 18 l-ssec.

Running Scared dashed over the opening three furlongs in 39 4-ssec and established a lead of about three lengths. Jester Jinks did not look likely to close the gap in the straight, but his race form, notably his win at Ashburton last week, should have the most accurate bearing on his chance in the Donald Grant Memorial at Washdyke. Three members of J. C. Tomkinson's team, none of them engaged on the first day at Washdyke, were In two other smart ’ six-furlong trials. Manana (A. J. Stokes) ran away from Pease (Gullery) over six furlongs, finishing four lengths clear in Imin 18 l-ssec. Manana, which is making pleasing progress for winter racing at Trentham and the Grand National carnival, recorded 39 4-ssec for the final three furlongs. The brothers. Shipboard (Stokes) and Shipmaster (Tucker). shaped promisingly over six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, the last three in 40 2-ssec. They are fully related to Shipmate. a winner for the Tomkinson stable. EASING DOWN Sabell (Low) impressed more than his stablemate Status Symbov (J. Kerkvliet) in their sixfurlong trial. Although they were easing down in the last few strides they finished a good gallop in Imin 19 3-ssec. They had recorded 38 3-ssec for the opening three furlongs. Royal Blue was scratched yesterday from the South Canterbury club’s Beaconsfield Improvers’ Handicap, but only because of a wide barrier position. She shaped well in her gallop to beat Lady Entwine by three lengths in Imin 20 2-ssec.

Pretentious (Mein) and Aconite (Hadfield) followed in Imin 21 l-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Pretentious shaped as if he had thrived since his easy win in maiden class at Ashburton last week. RIVALS Lady Velvet (Moir) led New Mint ’<Tucker) by a neck after running six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec, the last three in 39

2- They could be two of the stronger contenders for Kingsdown Handicap honours at Washdyke. Danny Kaye (Hadfield) and Talic (Stechmann) sprinted in from the six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec, the last three in 41 3-

The Wingatul jockey, P. J. Silver, will ride Danny Kaye in the Donald Grant Memorial at Washdyke. Coseta (C. Kerkvliet) and Blind Date (Taggart) followed over six furlongs Imin 23 l-ssec. Lovely Clover (Daly) and Takatu (Swanson) recorded Imin 21sec for six furlongs and 40 3-ssec for the final three.

Master Sheeny (Jackson) dropped into a gap of several lengths behind Retinue (Beck) in the early stages of a sevenfurlong gallop, but there was only three-quarters of a length between the stablemates at the finish. They recorded Imin 21 2-ssec, and' Master Sheeny ran the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec.

Millie Small (Mein) led Agrippa (C. Kerkvliet) by a

neck finishing six furlongs In imin 19 4-ssec, the opening three in 39 l-ssec.

Millie Small should be one of the stronger light-weight (fancies tn the Donald Grant Memorial at Washdyke after an improver’s fourth at Ashburton. Massakai (Cowles) did well to run a mile in Imin 49 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. He was not seasoned enough to last turn miles and a half in the steeplechase at Ashburton, but he could make a bold run in the Orbell Steeples at Washdyke. Silver Kingdom (Swanson) gave a competent display over eight fences. He worked up to a good pace to finish with two neat leaps at the double. Silver Kingdom will do his future racing for Messrs D. C. Gould and R. R. Jordan. The eight-year-old has not raced since the Grand National meeting, where he was placed as a hurdler.

Surprise Autumn (Moir) shaped well when tried over three brush fences, finishing at the double.
