RACING Sabell Picked For Grant Memorial

Sabell lacks good size, but loses no stature on the score of gameness when he comes to form, and he should be a formidable challenger for the honours in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap at Washdyke tomorrow.

Sabell recaptured form with a win over a mile on the first day of the Oamaru winter meeting, then a second to Master Sheeny over a mile and a quarter on the second day.

After a Saturday off last week he looks as if he will come back better than ever for his bid in the first leg of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double. The race has attracted a big percentage of form runners, from Carpenter at the top to the Riverton-trained Willypay on the minimum. Dunedin Winner Sabell is second top-weight with 8-5, and has 91b less than Carpenter, winner of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Birthday Handicap. 11 furlongs, at his latest start, and winner of two other middle distance races, one at Washdyke earlier in the year. Carpenter did not develop form of much account until he was tried at middle distances, but if the ground is soft enough to dull the brilliance of the best milers one of bis powerful finishes might be irresistible. Belltana may carry heavy ; southern backing after a pro-| ductive early winter cam-, paign. This started with a win over seven furlongs at the Dunedin winter meeting. Then he ran Sabeil to a head in the Oamaru club’s North Otago Handicap, and was a fast-finishing fourth over i seven furlongs on the second day. Belltana has won up to a middle distance and has raced well on soft and firm tracks alike. True Form Jester Jinks did not show much when racing against Belltana and others at the Dunedin winter meeting, but I this was removes below his' best He was seen at his , best when winning the Maronan Handicap, one mile, at i Ashburton last week. Jester Jinks has shown a dislike for running in close quarters in his fields, but when J. R. Dowling allowed him to bowl along out in the open against the milers at Ashburton he showed genuine racing qualities and won handily. Dowling will ride him again tomorrow, and this should be a strong and a popular combination.

Lisa, third behind Master Sheeny and Sabell at Oamaru, is another competent miler in the lower half of the handicap.

Willypay has done much of his racing short of a mile, but he has a strong record at seven furlongs, and has been one of the most impressive hack graduates in Southland this season.

His strongly-finishing third behind Belltana and Ronrico in the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Empire Handicap on June 5 holds nothing but promise for his immediate racing over a bit more ground. Danny Kaye is one of the problem light-weights in the field. Luck was against him when he ran second at Amberley and again at Oamaru, but he showed nothing at Ashburton last week.

Millie Small, equal fourth in the sprint at Ashburton when having her first start since Easter, and Shakes, an-

other light-weight which should have found recent racing and schooling beneficial, appeal most strongly of the others. Second Leg On form Beau Supreme should be a dominating favourite for the Thomas Seaton j Memorial, second leg of the double. Beau Supreme faces this test in intermediate class with a solid background of performance in the open ranks. This started with an unlucky second in the Waimate Cup. Then came seconds, behind Carpenter and Waitohi, at the Dunedin winter meeting, and a fourth behind Master Sheeny, Sabell, and Lisa in the Oamaru Win- ’ ter Cup. ■ The Missionary, at eight i years, retains the ability to show a flash of form, and he will be one of the few backed with any confidence to beat Beau Supreme. The Missionary was third only a head and half head from victory in the North Otago Handicap, won by Sabell. i His run in the Oamaru Winter Cup was comparatively weak, but he looks a place prospect at least in a very ordinary field. Our Leigh, this season’s Dunedin Guineas winner; Running Scared, an improving four-year-old from P. H. Jones’s Riccafton stable; and Cumberland, a winner against useful hacks at Riccarton in February and also a competent galloper on winter tracks, may be the best of the others.
