Plan To Invite Chichester
(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 29. The Marlborough Aero Club proposes to invite Sir Francis Chichester, Miss Jean Batten, and Air Commodore A. E. Clouston to its fortieth anniversary celebrations in Blenheim next Easter.
All three are honorary life members of the club. Sir Francis Chichester visited Blenheim in 1930 after his solo flight from England to Australia to take part in an air pageant at Woodbourne, now the site of the Air Force
base and Blenheim’s airport. Miss Batten, C.8.E., a New Zealander who won international fame for her intercontinental and trans-ocean solo flights in single-engined aircraft, including one from England to New Zealand, also visited Blenheim in the course of her aerial travels. She is now living in England. Air Commodore Clouston, C. 8., D. 5.0., D.F.C., A.F.C., has had a distinguished career in the Royal Air Force, including posts as Air Officer Commanding, Singapore, and commands in the United Kingdom.
Air Commodore Clouston, who was born in Motueka, learned to fly with the Marlborough Aero Club before he joined the Royal Air Force in 1930.
