MOUNTAIN SAFETY
An essay competition on mountain safety will be held by the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee. Mr B. Thomas, representing the police, proposed the competition at a meeting of the committee this week. If the competition was aimed at those of secondary school age the attitude of these young people to mountain safety and their knowledge of it would be found, he said. Defects could then be remedied. The practice of shooting deer from helicopters was questioned by the committee. “There is not much we can do but object to this dangerous practice,” said the chairman (Mr A. T. Burden).
