20 TREES DIE
Loss By County
Twenty of 70 trees planted on the FTincess Margaret Hospital frontage had died through lack of maintenance, damage by mowers, and by cars running over them, said the council’s tree-planting adviser, Mr D. St. G. Gunn, in a report to the Heathcote County Council last night. Cr. C. M. A. Thompson said that Mr Gunn’s report, which referred to lack of maintenance on other reserves, was an indictment of the council.
On his motion, it was decided to draw the attention of the staff to the report, and to ask for more attention in future.
Cr. W. B. Laing said that the council had been shortstaffed, and the men could not be expected to do the work. He would like to see more men on reserves, said the County Engineer (Mr J. McF. Hamilton).
“Why plant trees, then, if we can’t maintain them?” asked Cr. Thompson. Mr Hamilton said the council had allowed only for replacement planting this year.
