New Name Proposed For Children’s Society
The Christchurch branch of the Emotionally Disturbed Children’s Society hopes to pass a resolution at its monthly meeting next Thursday to change the name of the society to the Disturbed Children’s Aid Movement
The president of the society (Mrs E. J. Price) said yesterday that this was being done to make it much simpler for the public. Mrs Price said the Christchurch branch was affiliated to the Auckland branch of the society, but had felt for some time the need to become a separate movement and to adopt its own measures. These measures would be planned to stimulate public interest and support for the prevention, recognition and assistance of emotional disturbance in children; to promote the extension of educational and clinical services to assist this problem; to work towards the establishment of bursaries to assist suitable people to be trained; to offer support and understanding to parents; and to act as an information centre on existing services.
Mrs Price said that although the society, which was established last October, was progressing rapidly there was a desperate need for more facilities and trained people to help emotionally disturbed children.
“At present our member-
ship exceeds 70,** she said. “This is an indication of the way in which the public is responding to our society, not only parents but many others who are professionally engaged.” Mrs Price said that at the meeting next Thursday emotional development in the young child would be discussed by Dr. M. E. MacCready, of the Health Department.
