ADDRESS ON MINERALS
134 At Club Meeting
One hundred and thirtyfour members attended the June meeting of the Canterbury Mineral and Lapidary Club which was addressed by Mr A. Beck, of the Geological Survey, on the renewed Interest in economic minerals and the West Coast coal fields. Mr Beck described how various sections of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research were cooperating to develop these aspects of the national economy and how older maps were being corrected and more detailed studies being made of local districts. In the economic mineral field, Mr Beck said, surface prospects must be good enough to justify seismic survey, magnetometer, air, and ground tests because these cost hundreds of pounds a day.
