Planting Of Trees

Hundreds of native trees were planted in the Hunter Reserve at Church Bay gully yesterday by about 40 members of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. The chairman of the society (Mr T. M. C. Hay) said last evening that under the direction of Mr C. Jones, who established the initial native section at the Botanic Gardens, the , trees were lifted from Mr O. Hunter’s nursery at Diamond Harbour and planted at Church Bay. Mr Hay said that members working in the reserve for the first time bad been impressed by the number of northern trees thriving in the gully. These included pukanui, parapara, puriri, whau and taraire.

Mr Hunter, who was recently awarded the Loder Cup for native plant protection and propagation, thanked the | society for its effort.
