BURNSIDE DELAY

Gymnasium Project

The continued delay of any positive news about the Burnside High School gymnasium project was very deeply felt by the school community, the school’s headmaster (Mr C. Cross) reported to the board of governors last evening. A letter from the Department of Education, written to the headmaster, said that because of the present economic difficulties the department had been asked to review draft projects, and less urgent items might have to be postponed. However, it was known that the proposed Burnside High School library had been retained on the programme. A later letter from the department said that until discussions with the Government were complete it was not known if the subsidy for the gymnasium would be available immediately. The board’s secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that late yesterday afternoon the building programme was still with the Treasury.
