CONGO DEATH

U.K. Nurse Killed (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) KINSHASA, June 1. Winnifred Davies, a British nurse belonging to a Protestant missionary order, was reported to have been killed over the week-end by Congolese rebels near Kisangani in the eastern Congo. Authoritative sources in Kisangani, quoted by the local Roman Catholic news agency, also said that a Dutch Roman Catholic priest Father Alphonsus Maria Strijbosch, who was held hostage for 33 months with Winnifred Davies, was saved by the Congolese National Army. He now was reported to be on his way to Kisangani and was said to be in good health. Miss Davies, aged 51, was born in North Wales. She came to the Congo about 20 years ago and was one of 11 missionaries of the evangelisation crusade reported missing or captured by rebels in 1964. All the others have since been accounted for, and Miss Davies and Father Strijbosch were the last two missionaries to be held by rebels.

Critically Ill.—A former President of Mexico, Adolfo Lopez Mateos, aged 57, was admitted to hospital yesterday after suffering a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Eight hours later he was still in a coma. Hospital attendants said his condition was considered critical.—Mexico City, June 1.
