Chatham Islands Fishing
Sir,—As a fisherman who wishes to go to the Chathams crayfishing, I was most interested to learn that the Northland fishing boat Provider defied the Marine Department and sailed without the correct crew. I am vety interested to know what penalty,' if any, was inflicted upon the owner. Can the Marine Department stop the boat from fishing?— Yours, etc.. May 17, 1967.
[The Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) replies: “The alleged illegal sailing is currently being investigated by my department. Should these investigations reveal breaches of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1952, prosecution proceedings would be Instituted. The severity of any penalties imposed will, of course, rest with the court. I am very concerned for the safety of life and property at sea and I view very seriously any such alleged offences against this wholly desirable legislation."]
