Fewer Television Sets Being Made
(New Zealand Pres* Association? AUCKLAND, May 31. Television manufacturers would produce between 70,000 and 80,000 television sets this year, the president of the Radio and Television Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. H. Walker) said today.
The figure is well down on the 102,000 sets sold in 1906. Manufacturers were diversifying production to reduce the effect of the lower sales expected. “We will be making more tape recorders, radiograms, transistor portables and so on.” he said. Mr Walker said that before the introduction of television
about 160,000 radio sets a year were made in New Zealand, compared with less than 100,000 a year now. He said he did not expect any problems in selling all the television sets produced. The setback 18 months ago, with financial curbs and rental restrictions, had made the industry realise that it must not over-produce.
