“PHYSICIAN” GAOLED

Used Forged Documents (N.Z-P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) BERLIN, May 31. One of West Berlin’s most popular physicians was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment on fraud charges yesterday after admitting he had never studied medicine. Walter Guenther, aged 44, rose to success with the help of forged documents. He told the Court his medical career began in 1946 after his release from a Czechoslovakian internment camp where, he said, he gained most of his medical experience.

Only five years later he became senior physician at West Berlin's Neukoelln Hospital, turning it into one of the most modern clinics in the city. He told the Court: “Success seemed to confirm that I did not commit a crime.” The fraud was uncovered when the authorities began to investigate a claim he made for a pension.
