NEW BUCKET-CONVEYER EXCAVATOR.—This giant steel excavator, 118ft high and weighing 4300 tons, is shown during its trials at Cottbus, East Germany. The machine, which will be used in opencast mining, can move 10,200 yards of overburden an hour. It has 256 wheels, which run on four standardgauge rail tracks, and it can be used not only for deep cutting but also for cutting above track level.
