IN PAIN, BUT WON MATCH

(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter— Copyright) FORMBY (Lancashire). Twice winner of the British amateur golf championship, M. J. Bonallack, cried out in pain at the thirteenth tee when he twisted his back while attempting a drive in his third round match against P. Davidson in this year’s championship.

For six holes he limped around the course, unable to swing fully or to bend down to sight his putts or pick up the ball from the hole. But Bonallack managed to go ahead of Davidson for a one-hole win to become one of the last 32 in the competition. Bonallack hurt his back when playing for Britain in the Eisenhower Trophy matches in Mexico last year and his diances of throwing

off the painful injury and playing top-class golf for the remaining five rounds appear slim. The injury took three weeks to clear up in Mexico. SUPERB RECOVERY The Walker Cup captain, J. B. Carr, of Ireland, attemping to win the coveted title for the fourth time in 14 years, appeared to be facing almost certain defeat when be was three down at the fifteenth hole against M. Kelley, the 22-year-old English youth captain of last year. But Carr recovered superbly to win at the nineteenth. R. D. Shade, who was runner-up last year, did not lose a hole while defeating B. Corscadden, 7 and 6. He has played only 24 holes in two matches to reach the last 32. The United States challenge gained strength when eight Americans reached the last 32. The Walker Cup men—D. Gray, R. Dickson, E. Tutwiler, R. Cerrudo, M. Fleckman, J. Grant and R. Murphy—all won through their second and third round matches on Wednesday. The other United i States survivor was J. P. KonIsek.
