TEST XI CLAIMS
Edrich Hits Century (N.Z.P.A.-Rent er—right) LONDON. The Surrey batsmen, J. H. Edrich and K. F. Barrington, staked firm claims for England places in next week’s first test against India when they played punishing innings against the tourists at the Oval on Wednesday. Edrich (108) and Barrington (84) added 141 for the third wicket in two hours and a half. At stumps, Surrey was 313 for nine. Scores in county games were:— At Leicester: Leicestershire 203, Kent 5/0. At Northampton: Northamptonshire 272 (M. Mustaq 113; R. Hobbs 5/03) v. Essex. At Nottingham: Hampshire 240, Nottinghamshire 17/1. At Kidderminster: Worcestershire 110 (A. Nicholson 4/55), Yorkshire 111/0. At Edgbaston: Sussex 104 (J. Allen 5/11), Warwickshire 108 (J. Snow 5/42, A. Buss 4/42). At Chesterfield: Derbyshire 221/7 (D. Smith 91 not out, E. Smith 63 not out) v. Glamorgan.
