Picking Team For Profit
Who was Canterbury’s heat firat five-eighths in the period since the Second World War? Was it the mercurial J. Hotop? Perhaps it was B. A. Watt—or D. D. Wilson. And J. Waine and P. V. Kearney cannot be forgotten. The list is long, and the argamenta among Rugby followers endless. This winter, with no major overseas tour to capture the interest, readers of “The Press” have the chance of turning their speculation to profit by picking the best team from all the players who have represented Canterbury since the war. Prize money totalling £lOO is to be won in the contest The first prize will be £7O, and there will be £2O for second and £lO for third. For the next 11 Saturdays an article will appear on the feature sports page of "The Press” giving pen
pictures of prominent Canterbury Rugby players. Eleven positions will be dealt with. On the same page there will be a coupon and readers are asked to fill this in and send it to “Canterbur ’• Best,” c/o. P.O. Box 1005, Christchurch, by the Wednesday after each Saturday’s article. The competition starts tomorrow, with the choice of full-back. The first completed coupons must reach "The Press” by next Wednesday, June 7. At the end of the 11 weeks a panel of prominent Canterbury Rugby men will select its team from the post-war representative players. The entrant whose team is closest to the side chosen by the panel will be awarded first prize. Only one entry a person can be received each week, and the staff of "The Press” is not eligible to enter f-r the competition.
