Hong Kong Asks China For Water

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, June 1. The Hong Kong Government has asked China for extra water to ease a continuing drought, in spite of strained Anglo-Chinese relations after recent riots in the British colony.

An official spokesman said ; yesterday that the Government was awaiting a reply from the Chinese authorities : to a request made on May 23 for extra water in July. Under an agreement with the Chinese, Hong Kong draws water through a pipeline from the neighbouring Kwangtung province, but the supply normally stops in July, August and September. Right-wing workers returned to work yesterday at a textiles factory, one of three hit by strikes in protest against leftist intimidation. The rightists walked off their jobs on Monday to show the left-wingers, who had earlier sat down in protest against alleged British brut- ' ality to Chinese residents ' during recent disturbances, were not influential in the textile industry, according to : a cotton workers' spokesman. The leftist campaign against i the Hong Kong Government also continued yesterday with

attacks in two Communist newspapers against Britain for staging a military exercise from the aircraft-carrier Bulwark, now in Hong Kong Harbour.

The Hong Kong Government warned that people who put up inflammatory posters would be liable to prosecution.
