Minor Alterations In Malvern County Rates

Estimates for a total expenditure of £328,741 were approved by the Malvern County Council at a special meeting on Tuesday. In 1966-67 when the county did not include Taw era county, amalgamated from April 1, total expenditure was £236,992. Notice was given to strike the same general rate of 1.248 d, or 0.52 of a cent in the dollar over the whole county. Last year, the Malvern and Selwyn riding rates were 1.25 d. The old Tawera county rate was 1.125 d. The Tawera increase was to meet higher reading expenditure, said the chairman (Mr C. O. Redfern). The council decided to help ratepayers and its overdraft, to offer a four per cent discount for early-paid rates, in-

stead. of last year’s discount of two and a half per cent Estimated surpluses are expected to produce a credit balance of about £12,600 at the end of the year. On total roading expenditure of £171,550, the estimates provided for £113,804 from National Roads Board subsidy and grants, and £6OOO in loan money. No allowance was made for a possible cut in N.R.S. subsidies. In the riding estimates, £66,150 to be spent on Malvern area roads included £32,800 for new sealing. In the Selwyn riding roading totalled £28,950. Coleridge road sealing accounted for £9OOO, and Tawera’s £19,150 for roads included £lO,OOO for sealing on Dalethorpe and Kowai roads. Last year, Tawera spent £13,253 on roauj.

An amount of £lOOO was allowed for town-planning expenses. A transfer of £3OOO was made to the new council offices fund, making a total of £5OOO. If this amount is

not needed for furnishings, it will be used to reduce building loan requirements. The Clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin) said that provision was made to transfer £3500 to the plant renewal account: but as this would have an estimated credit balance of £14,747 at March 31 next, the £3500 could well be applied against the building loan.
