' JBfl now hands stay soft while you open oysters We’re Joking of course. It’s too late by 70 years T to advertise this castiron kitchen aid. It was found on a shelf in a hardware shop and used by a newspaper to puzzle readers. Maybe the inventor died in a debtor’s prison. Maybe the manufacturer had to diversify with horseshoes and tramtracks. But maybe too, things could have been different. If the obviously functional gadget had been adequately advertised we might still be using a streamlined stainless steel version today! Newspapers have made an immense contribution to progress, much of it through their advertising columns. For 100 years that’s been the natural place to look for news about new things that add to life’s fullness and flavour. Newspaper advertising creates demand. Demand stimulates invention. And so we have progress. fl Rseswen-tte bort ■mum place j Newspapers jgiyg ter. advertisan aod their eeetaawt
