REWARD FOR PICKING TEAM
The fault with most teams picked by unofficial selectors is, in the words of an All Black selector, “They don’t have to play: mine do.’’
However, readers of “The Press” will have the chance of gaining some reward for picking a Rugby team.
Beginning on Satur* day, “The Press” will be running a competition for readers to select the best team from all the players who have represented Canterbury since the Second World War. Prize money of £lOO may be won, with £7O being awarded as first prize, £2O for second, and £lO for third. For the next 11 Saturdays an article will appear on the feature sports page of “The Press” giving pen pictures of variou prominent Canterbury Rugby players. Eleven positions will be dealt with.
There will be a coupon on the same page and readers are asked to fill this in and send it to “Canterbury’s Best,” c/o. P.O. Box 1005, Christchurch, by the Wednesday after each Saturday’s article. At the end of the 11 weeks a panel of seven prominent Canterbury Rugby men— Messrs H. C. Blazey, J. O. Hatt-rsley, N. J. McPhail, J. D. Morton, S. R. Carleton, P. V. Kearney, and J. G. Rankin—will meet and the panel will select their team from the post-war representative players.
The entrant whose team is closest to the side chosen by the panel will be awarded first prize. Only one entry a person can be received each week, and the staff of "The Press” are not eligible to enter for the competition. The fir c * article on Saturday will deal with full-backs. The comparison of the merits of K. C. Stuart and W. F. McCormick, both All Black fullbacks, and such other prominent players as D. C. Leary, B. M. J. Dineen, T. R. Jackson, and E. Lucre will certainly cause some discussion among Rugby followers.
