INDIANAPOLIS RACE STOPPED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) INDIANAPOLIS. P. Jones, driving a revolutionary turbine car, was leading the annual 500-mile Indianapolis race when it was stopped by a sudden downpour yesterday.

Jones had been building up an impressive lead over the other 32 cars. The New Zealand driver, D.

Hulme was in twentieth position, behind J. Clark (Scotland) when the race was stopped, after only 18 laps. D. Gurney (United States), was second, and A. J. Foyt (United States) third. The favourite, M. Andretti, stopped in the eleventh lap with clutch trouble and managed to complete another lap before being halted again, apparently for the same reason. The race was stopped 18min 29sec after the start, but it was not until five hours la.ter that officials decided to postpone the event because it would not have been possible to complete the 500 miles before dark. The race: will be resumed today.
