Chch Fencers In National Trials
Two Christchurch fencers, Mrs O. Jekyll and P. Garland, will compete in Wellington next Tuesday in one of the two provincial tournaments being held to select the New Zealand team for the Australian championships in Adelaide on August 19. The other provincial tournament will be in Auckland on June 24. The president of the New Zealand Fencing Association (Mr A. H. Fenton) said that South Island fencers who were finalists in last year’s national championships, and who wanted to compete in Wellington, would have half their fare paid by the association. The New Zealand team of at least five men and four women will be selected by Mr B. H. Hampton, of Wellington. Mrs Jekyll (United Fencing Club) has held the national women’s title three times. Garland (University Fencing Club) was a member of the New Zealand university team which toured Australia last year-. The vice-president of the
N.Z.F.A. (Mr M. A. Sharfe) will be team manager in Australia. Australia - New Zealand visits are exchanged alternatively in years when there are no Olympic or Commonwealth Games.
