SPEEDBOAT ASSN.
I Grant Request ; Renewed : A further application for > assistance towards the cost of sending a New Zealand team i to the world speedboat chami pionships in Canada in July was being lodged with the Golden Kiwi Lottery Board, said the secretary of the New Zealand Speedboat Association (Mr B. M. Andrews) last evening. The association's application for £l5OO made earlier this year had been refused by the board on the ground that speedboating in New Zealand was “a predominantly adult sport,” said Mr Andrews. “It was interesting to read this morning that the lottery board had made grants towards sending snooker, men's basketball, and judo teams overseas. “Our further application will provide facts and figures from our speedboat drivers' register to show that speedboating is not a predominantly adult sport “Four of the present New Zealand record-holders are aged 23 or under,” Mr Andrews said. “We are certain that speedboating is no more a sport for adults than is snooker or billiards, for example.”
