Prisoner At Large
Police searching for a prisoner who escaped from his escort by jumping off a train at Lyttelton yesterday morning had found no trace of him last night The prisoner, Martin O’Keefe, aged 28, was to have appeared in the Magistrate’s
Court at Christchurch tomorrow morning on a charge of theft O'Keefe is 6ft 3in, of big build, with brown hair, prominent eyes and a fair complexion. He was wearing a brown suede jacket, brown mohair jersey and dark grey trousers when he escaped. He |
was carrying a brown and white fleck travel bag. He was under police escort from Wellington to Christchurch on the steamer express Maori. He was put on the train from Lyttelton to Christchurch in charge of a constable, but jumped from the train just before it left the station. O’Keefe comes from Christ church. Police inquiries throughout the day failed to find him.
