Confidence In Drivers’ Union

A motion of no confidence in the officers, organisers and executive of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union was defeated by a 95 per cent majority at a special meeting of the union last evening.

The union president (Mr H. Hornbrook) reported this after the meeting attended by -127 members.

Another motion alleging the condoning of irregularities by union officers in ballots for secretary and president, was also heavily defeated, said Mr Hornbrook. The ’ tipns had been moved by Mr G. F. Searle, an executive member. Mr Searle also moved other motions last evening that were heavily defeated, said Mr Hornbrook. But a motion from the floor that Mr Searle be dismissed from the executive of the union, said Mr Hornbrook, was adopted. Mr Hornbrook described the special meeting as one of the biggest held by the union in recent years. He said that a motion affecting the retirement leave of the retiring secretary (Mr A. S. Roberts) was withdrawn, at the request of the mover, Mr Searle.
