Bar Hours

Sir,—lf there is a wrong way to do things the National Government seems to do it. As Mr Holyoake says, the referendum will cost £150,000, no small amount when one considers our pre* sent financial position. I consider that only one question should be on the voting paper: “Are you in favour of longer licensing hours?” The 6 o’clock hour was introduced in 1916 for the duration of the war and was supposed to -be repealed six months after. On top of this the Licensing Commission has granted “wine-and-dine” licences to several hotels which can keep open till 11.30 p.m.—Yours, etc., OLD-TIMER. May 31, 1967.
