Clothing Institute Branch Formed In Christchurch

A Canterbury branch of the ' Clothing Institute of New ' Zealand has been formed, j about 30 representatives of , clothing firms attending the ; opening meeting in Christ- : church this week. The acting-secretary (Mr 1 N. Gill) said that branches had been in existence in ’ Auckland for seven years and ' for 18 months in Wellington. Among the achievements of the institute, said Mr Gill, was its work in drawing up the curriculum which had been accepted by the Trades Certification Board for its course, and in drawing up, in conjunction with the Garment Manufacturing Association, a similar curriculum now used as a basis for sewing engineers’ courses. The vice-chairman of the Auckland branch (Mr G. Guy) said that a national executive, made up from the Auckland and Wellington branches, existed to which Christchurch would now be able to contribute two members. He felt this contribution was long overdue, as there was probably more clothing production in the South Island than there was in the North Island. A steering committee of eight was elected .
