Dashing Display Over Fences By Ringlock

"The Fret*" Special Servic*

AUCKLAND.

Ringlock, a veteran of many big jumping races, stole the limelight from his Great Northern Steeplechase rival, Kumai, over 10 steeplechase fences at Ellerslie yesterday.

While Kumai kept at) a slow pace and jumped high, Ringlock showed a good turn of speed on the flat and took his fences brilliantly.

Ridden by G. A. Walters, Ringlock led a six-year-old gelding by Globe from Sly Love (Potter) and Kumai (Hillis) at the end of a round, starting from the big ffence near the seven furlongs and finishing at the big brush near the mile. Ringlock, full iof running, was about five lengths ahead of the Globe gelding with a gap of about six lengths to Kumai.

Walters was elated with Ringlock’s effort “He jumped perfectly,” said Walters. “On that school he is going to be hard to beat on Monday.”

Kumai, having his first look at the Ellerslie country, treated 'most of the fences with care. He never looked likely to make a mistake, but lost ground through jumping high. J

“He didn’t like the little fences at all,” said Hillis afterwards.

King’s Credit (Norris) started with the other three but at the fence on top of the hill he fell heavily. After wards, when ridden by G. A. Walters, he jumped the fences in the middle twice, the first time slowly and the second with confidence.

King’s Credit is in the Greenlane Steeplechase on Saturday. Kumai will contest

the York Handicap as a preliminary to the Great Northern Steeplechase.

Otaika (Walsh) and Howe Fair (Norris) finished clear ot Seaman (Walters) over four hurdles on the outside of the course proper. Howe Fair and Otaika are light-weight* in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday. Good Showing

EmphaUque (Walsh) appreciated the easy footing when he jumped six hurdles impressively.

Homespun (G. Hughes), which will jump on Thursday, galloped twice round on the No. 1 ?rass, running the last mile in mln SSsec. He looks to have thrived since winning over hurdles at Te Rapa on May 29. Sungod (Walters) and Outspan (Norris) jumped four hurdles. Of the two, Outspan went the better.

Tontine (Hillis) was too good for Novel (Irwin), Black Emperor (Proud) and Telemachus (Clarke) over 10 steeplechase fences starting at the seven furlongs. Tontine finished about flve lengths in front of Novel, which dislodged his rider after jumping the last, with gaps to Telemachus and Black Emperor.

Floodlit, a candidate for the Members’ Handicap on Saturday, galloped most impressively over three furlongs.

Galloping was done on th* No. 1 grass which was cutting out.

Floodlit (G. Hughe*) and Pon-' sadin (Raklander) were together after three furlongs in 35 4-ssec.

Floodlit, a handsome three-year-old by Wilkes from Cabonne, looks r**dy for a bold effort on Saturday when he will b* ridden by G. F. Hughes.
