Referees Get Tough
(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA. Rugby referees in Tauranga will banish, without warning, any player guilty of late tackling in games which they are controlling. At its meeting, the Tauranga Referees’ Association emphasised that the late tackle which concerned it was the deliberate shoulder charge, undertaken with the intent to incapacitate the victim.
There was a distinction between this and the defending player who committed himself to an orthodox tackle but found too late that his opponent had passed the ball.
