Golden Kiwi Grants Totalling £106,000

WELLINGTON, May 30.

Grants totalling £106,868 from the Golden Kiwi lottery were announced today by the chairman of the recreation and youth activities distribution committee (Sir William Stevenson).

The grants were made after consideration of 359 applications for financial aid.

It deferred looking at 14 applications because it needed more information or because applicants had not yet raised sufficient funds, and it declined 29 applications. Ten grants and five "approvals in principle” were cancelled because of changes in circumstances. The payments include:— Immediate Granta National Water Safety Council (to finance campaign), £20,000; National Mountain Safety Council (to finance campaign), £7500; New Zealand Volunteer Coastguard Service, Auckland (to buy equipment), £750; Rarangi Surf Life-saving Club, Marlborough (to complete clubhouse), £650. Conditional Granta New Zealand Billiards Association and control council (to send team to world snooker championships in Cey. Ion), £100; New Zealand Judo Federation (to send national team to Oceania championships), £180; New Zealand Men’s Basketball Association (to send team to Australian national championships), £5OO. New Zealand Volunteer Coastguard Service, Auckland (to buy cadet-training vessel), £500; Havelock Ski Club, Hawke’s Bay (to complete lodge at Mount Ruapehu), £3000; Nelson College Old

Boys’ Football Club (to erect ' clubrooms), £lOOO. Caroline Bay Association, Timaru (to build community centre), £7000; Rakaia Rugby Football Club (to erect gymnasium and clubroom), £750; Rangiora Returned Services’ Association (to restore hall after fire damage), £700; Sheffield Community Centre (to improve and extend hall), £l5OO.

Of these, 11 were approved for immediate payment (totalling £39,910) and 66 were approved (£66,958) for payment when set conditions had been met.

The committee confirmed 189 grants conditionally approved at previous meetings and agreed to requests to vary 35 existing grants.
