LONDON, May 29.
Nine Indian-born Chinese seamen, all holding British passports have become human shuttlecocks in a wrangle involving immigration authorities in four countries.
They were flown from Britain yesterday— for the second time—to Greece, which had twice deported them to London.
The men, aged between 19 and 27, were issued with passports by the British High Commissioner’s office in Calcutta when they took jobs on board a steamship. The ship sailed for Hong Kong in April to be scrapped. The men wanted to settle in Hong Kong but did not have the necessary permits.
They had to leave Hong Kong and the owners of their ship flew the whole crew, including some Greeks, to Athens. The Indian authorities have refused them permission to re-enter the country.
