THE PANEL
ALL sections of Rugby from New Zealand representation to president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and chairman of the AU Black selection panel are included in the sevenman panel of Rugby experts who wiU choose the Canterbury post-war Rugby team. The panel is Messrs N. J. McPhail, H. C. Blazey, J. O. Hattersley, S. R. Carleton, J. D. Morton, J. G. Rankin, and.P. V. Kearney. Mr McPhail was probably the most successful All Black coach and selector in New Zealand Rugby, and also a selector of the great Ranfurly Shield teams of the ’fifties. Messrs J. G. Rankin, J. O. Hattersley and J. D. Mor-
ton were also Canterbury selectors and all had fine playing records for Canterbury, with Mr Rankin earning All Black selection against the 1937 Springboks. An earlier vintage is represented by Mr S. R. Carleton. Mr Carleton played for New Zealand in South Africa in 1928. Mr H. C. Blazey is an immediate past-president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and a past-president of the Canterbury Rugby Union, an office which is also held by Mr Hattersley. Mr P. V. Kearney was one of Canterbury’s most attractive five-eighths just after the war and a player who has given great service to the Cantabrians Rugby Club.
