One-Goal Victory

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY.

The touring Scottish soccer team withstood a late Australian rally to win, 1-0, before a crowd of 35,000 at Sydney yesterday. Scotland outplayed Australia in the first half and deserved its one-goal lead—scored by the inside-left, A. Ferguson—at the interval. But the fit and physically more powerful Australians fought back in the second half and with luck could have saved the match. In the final minutes they hammered at the Scottish goal and the equaliser almost came when, with H. Thomson helpless on the ground, the rightback, W. Callaghan, got his foot to an Australian shot and deflected the ball for a corner.
