10-Point Win To University A

UNIVERSITY A U: G. Wallis, R. C. Moreton tries; D. C. Leary, two penalty goals and two conversions. NEW BRIGHTON 6: B. Hobson two penalty goals. Two converted tries scored in the second spell gave University victory at Jellicoe Park. With two fine forward packs playing hard, bruising Rugby the game was very keenly contested. University outplayed the opposition in line-out play Its ability to control the ball in this phase was the deciding factor of the match. Unfortunately, tempers became frayed and blows were exchanged. The University front row forward, W. Blair was a victim of one such skirmish and had to leave the field. G. Bacon and the former All Black, J. N. Creighton, the hookers, had an interesting battle, both winning a tight head. This was a fine performance for the young New Brighton hooker against his more experienced opposite. . backline received a lot of good . ball from line-outs, but most of I the attacks were disrupted by the relentless tackling of R. . Pierce, G. Sheppard and G. Hobson. . Of the University forwards, G. . Loveridge, Creighton and R. Field all played well in the . tight and P. Duncan and L. , O’Reilly both had good games . in the loose. R. Sommerville , and J. Owens combined well . and engineered many fine at- . tacking movements. G. Wallis . covered himself with glory by scoring a spectacular try. New Brighton’s downfall was , the inability of the backline to [ do anything constructive and i many opportunities were lost by cross-field running and unintelligent kicking. New Brighton’s I forwards put in a lot of hard > work; only to see their efforts J squandered. I. H. Penrose, K. t Tanner, D. Dalton, B.
